BFF

Written & performed by Mary-Frances Doherty

On the first day in her new school, Chloe meets Sophie and just knows they will be best friends!

For a while, life is pretty great. With Sophie by her side, Chloe feels like she can do anything. Full of excitement, Chloe starts to post social media videos online, with moderate success...until something happens that changes everything. As Chloe and Sophie’s friendship takes a turn for the worse, Chloe discovers that you can’t always control everything, especially online, and that best friends don’t always stay best friends forever.

There are three strands to the performance, interwoven to form a dynamic experience for the audience. The first is Chloe’s monologue, where she talks directly to the audience as she details the journey of her friendship with first Sophie and then Michelle, recalling events and sharing her thoughts and feelings; the second is Chloe’s live social media videos, projected in real time onto a large backdrop behind her, complete with well known phrases such as “Don’t forget to hit like and subscribe”; and the third is an interactive game of “Would you rather...?” (Friendship Edition) that Mary-Frances plays with the audience live, in real time, in the real world.

‘A very emotional, interactive, and relatable piece that really strikes a chord with what is happening in today’s world of social media... This performance completely represents how social media has exacerbated issues surrounding

likeability and popularity in the modern world.’
